House of Sarah, women talk on ousting violence

WOMEN and young girls need to be educated to be able to report on violence-related incidents.

The House of Sarah, a non-governmental organisation for the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia, is working on eliminating violence against women in the country.

House of Sarah's specialist for gender, Tupou Vere, during a talanoa session in Suva yesterday said these victims carried the pain on their own.

"We have found that women and girls tend to think that this is a normal routine in their relationship or it's a shame that keeps them from sharing what's taking place.

"The common reason why young girls and women face violence is they lack support from the environment they live in," Ms Vere said.

She said it was vital for women and young girls to share common thoughts on how these issues could be addressed and at the same time help alleviate the issue.

"House of Sarah as part of the Anglican church's response to violence against women organised this event to bring together women of different faiths to come and share their stories and experiences and help address violence against women and girls.

"It's important to gather together and share our common thoughts on how we could address this further," she added.
