FTA raises concerns

THE Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) has echoed serious concerns over Government's decision to move the former Education Ministry permanent secretary, Iowane Tiko, to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Public Service Commission chairperson, Vishnu Mohan, on Sunday announced that the former Ministry of Youth and Sports permanent secretary, Alison Burchell, would take over Mr Tiko's previous role at the Education Ministry.

FTA acting secretary Peni Delaibatiki claimed the job of the PS required relevant qualification, experience and proven ability to contextualise the local needs and conditions.

"The present reforms are difficult to adapt to as they are completely new and will need time to adjust to," said Mr Delaibatiki.

"The outgoing PS has been involved in this education reform from the onset and despite some teething problems, the process has been progressing well.

"To replace him now with someone who knows very little about what has been happening seems illogical to say the least."

Attorney-General and Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had said that the Public Service Commission (PSC) was responsible for making such changes because they monitored permanent secretaries' performances.
