Residents welcome footbridges upgrade

IT was 2.30pm and parents started arriving in small punts to transport their children across from Muanikoso to their homes at Vunisaleka and Dibulu settlements in Narere, Nasinu yesterday.

The sight of people travelling to and fro in small punts to get to their homes has been a usual sight since last Saturday, when the Fiji Roads Authority contractors began upgrade works on the two footbridges that connected both settlements to the main centres.

The two footbridges have been earlier described as "death traps" by parents from both settlements because it had rusted beams, missing planks and no railings.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport had earlier directed the FRA to arrange for the upgrading of these footbridges, which would now include a rope guide rail to assist elderly and provide safety for children

Vunisaleka settlement headman Seremaia Saga said the residents were grateful the relevant authorities were able to attend to the plight faced by the people and others who used the bridge on a daily basis.

"We are so thankful," he said.

"We have been asking for the upgrade of the bridge for more than 10 years.

"Now that the upgrading works is almost completed, it will make it easier and safer for all of us."

Two weeks ago, this newspaper highlighted the plight faced by students on their first day of school, having to cross the two footbridges.
