New form to address shortages

A FORM will be distributed to head teachers and school principals around the country from next week to fill out and identify the areas they are experiencing shortages in.

Attorney-General and Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum revealed this during a press conference on Sunday and said this would assist the ministry to identify the areas that needed improvement.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said generally as a practice, education officers from the head office and divisional officers would tour schools to find out what schools needed.

"It becomes somewhat of a roadshow and bit of a jaunt and what we are doing now, and the form will be actually given out from next week, is that we are now going to get the head teachers, principals to fill out those forms and tell us which areas they have shortages in, and then of course, once the information is received by the ministry, they will carry out the assessments within the office," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

"They (education officers) do not have to go out, they can rely on the head teachers and the principals to give us that information and of course, we will try and fill out those positions."

He said the ministry was aware that most schools needed science and maths teachers.
