Give him a chance

DISHEARTENED Fiji 7s rugby fans have been urged to give coach Gareth Baber a chance.

The call comes from Sports Minister Laisenia Tuitubou after the team's disappointing performance at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Sydney at the weekend.

Mr Tuitubou said like Ben Ryan, Baber should be given a chance because he had the potential to take the team to greater heights at the Sevens World Cup in San Francisco, USA, in July.

He said when Ryan started as coach of the national side, many people criticised him and had better ideas.

"But Ben Ryan had a plan and I think we should give Baber a chance too," the minister said.

"Give him a chance."

When quizzed about the suggestions made by some fans for the coach to be changed, Mr Tuitubou said he would listen and go with any decision that the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) would make.

"From my opinion as the minister, I listen to the national sporting organisations. I don't want to interfere in their action plans.

"Because if I do interfere, their grants would be stopped by the world federation."

He said the fans should understand that there were bigger teams with more money wanting to beat Fiji because of the reputation the team had.

Mr Tuitubou said the Fijian people should get behind the team with all their hearts.

He said as a country, we needed to think about the players who played their hearts out and of the sacrifices of their families.

Since his arrival in January last year, Baber has been to 11 tournaments with only the Hong Kong 7s title under his belt.
