Rights of infogees

Monday, January 29, 2018

Update: 6:46PM THERE is a need for Governments to recognise the rights of "infogees" who ensure that people who are speaking out for all the right reasons are not silenced.

Pacific Freedom Forum chair Monica Miller said across the region, journalists face job losses or worse for exposing corruption and injustice and there was a desperate need for new options to keep their urgent messages alive.

With reference to "corruption" and violence in West Papua and 'Australia's inhumane treatment of refugees', PFF is calling for a clear resettlement policy that makes use of migrant skills to keep information from home countries alive.

PFF co-Chair Bernadette Carreon notes that Kurdish journalist Behrouz Boochani is the best known case of a journalist fleeing persecution, only to suffer detention as a refugee in the Pacific.

"Infogees such as Boochani should be seen as invaluable sources of information about the world around us, not punished for seeking liberty," she said.
