Good start

The fact that our boys came out unbeaten from the pool of death speaks volumes about the level of preparation and the character of the team. In our first pool game our boys were up against Samoa.

The physical Pacific affair lived up to expectations and Fiji outplayed their opponents.

There were some moments of headache for fans, but our boys had a firm grip on the match and maintained their winning run against our Pacific Island rivals.

Russia showed glimpses of their form from the early parts of 2000 and the fact that there was once upon a time when the Russians held our boys to a 10-10 draw.

Fiji struggled to dispatch the Russians, who held the ball possession for longer periods compared with Fiji.

The 24-0 score-line was not expected, especially when the All Blacks 7s piled up 61 points against Russia. But a win is a win and teams normally bounce back after their opening day's poor outing. Once we beat Russia we had one foot in the quarters. The final pool game against traditional rivals NZ was to decide who would top the pool. Fiji defended pretty well, but the Fijian power in the All Blacks 7s was the telling factor.

Many had expected NZ to push our boys and have their way all throughout, but they were caught by surprise with the way Fiji took the Cape Town 7s champions to the wire and finally came out victorious.

Our forwards Kunavula, Josua and Paula matched the intensity and Nasilasila was in a class of his own.

I still feel that Jerry has yet to show his form and he has been very quiet. He needs to step up and lead by example when the going gets tougher because that's when the pack looks up to the leader.

Nonetheless, our boys showed that they can be tough customers and they are capable of beating the high-flying sides. They just need to have self-belief, develop a positive attitude and maintain their discipline and composure.

As I pen my letter, our boys are warming up to face the United States, who were runner-up in their pool.
