Arena set for major facelift

RENOVATION of the Vodafone Arena is the next major project for the Fiji Sports Council (FSC).

Chairman, Peter Mazey said the project would begin next month. He made the comments during his address at the reopening of the FMF Gymnasium in Suva last Saturday.

The Vodafone Arena woud be closed for renovation from next month.

"This commenced with government support in 2012 when we saw the upgrade of the ANZ Stadium. This was followed by the upgrade of Lawaqa Park (in Nadroga), Victoria Tennis Courts in Suva and now the FMF Gymnasium. All these facilities had been brought up to international standards and had enabled Fiji to host world events," Mazey said.

"In June 2017, my board received government support on the revamp of the Vodafone Arena with our CEO commencing the planning and tender process. This is the next major project for the Fiji Sports Council. I'm happy to confirm that as a result of this, the initial phase of the project will commence next month."

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was the chief guest at the reopening of the FMF gym and opening of the first FSC headquarters.

Mazey believes the development has taken FSC into a new era.

"The newly-refurbished FMF Gymnasium is something we should all be proud of as Fijians. In recent years some have come to describe our FMF gym as a so called grand old lady. This grand old lady has finally been given a new lease of life and is today a new super model," he said.

"For the past 40 years, members of the Sports Council staff have operated out of five separate offices, some built in the Second World War and others converted from facility changing rooms but with the opening of our new integrated head office building, we can truly become a professional body — capable of delivering the best in hosting events, sports and physical activities in Fiji."
