CONSTRUCTION of night lights at the Labasa airport runway has been completed.

Airports Fiji Ltd chairperson Faiz Khan confirmed the construction works were completed last month.

He said the night lights were installed on the runway land that was in the possession of AFL.

"This was completed a month ago," he said.

"It was announced during the launch (last year) that completion of this project is subject to land acquisition on either side of the runway.

"Land acquisition is not entirely in Airport Fiji's control — with various land agencies involved and a process to be followed."

The night lights were constructed to cater for night flights to Labasa.

However, Fiji Airways has yet to decide schedules of night flights to Labasa.

Fiji Airways executive general manager corporate affairs Shaenaz Voss said this would be done in the near future.

"We will determine dates for Labasa night flights in the near future," she said.

"This development offers Fiji Link exciting opportunities to increase frequencies into Labasa, allowing more travel between the two main islands.

"The development will also make it easier for guests connecting from international flights via Nadi to Labasa the same day.

"We look forward to continued infrastructure enhancements at Labasa airport."
