Dengue case warning

HEALTH officials in the North have called on communities in Cakaudrove to clean their surroundings after confirmed dengue cases at the Savusavu Hospital.

Last week, 11 people tested positive for dengue fever at the Savusavu Hospital — four weeks after Labasa Town recorded a dengue outbreak.

The Ministry of Health earlier this month declared a dengue outbreak for Macuata subdivision, mainly for the Labasa Town area.

An email sent by the hospital team to Savusavu residents via network Savusavu eblast reminded communities to keep their surroundings clean.

Although the Ministry of Health has not responded to questions from this newspaper last Friday, the email on the Savusavu eblast network confirmed 11 people had tested positive for dengue.

The network confirmed the tests were confirmed by Monday last week.

"By the 22/1/2018, 11 people have tested positive for dengue fever around the greater Savusavu area," the email to the eblast network stated.

"Seven of these patients reside in the Wailevu tikina, villages namely Vunivesi, Urata, Naloaloa, Nukubolu, Levuka and Nakasa.

"Also a handful of people residing at Naqere, Nakama, Buca, Airport Rd and Savusavu main street are presenting with dengue-like symptoms."

The email reminded citizens about the need to keep surroundings clean.

"All receptacles such as tins, drums, containers and tyres should be disposed appropriately," the email stated.

"Also ensure your households, friends use appropriate clothing, sprays, repellents to keep away from mosquito bites."

The ministry earlier confirmed to this newspaper that it received between 39 and 78 confirmed cases of dengue every week at the Labasa Hospital in the month of December.

From January 1, 2017, to December 17, 2017, a total of 795 laboratory confirmed cases of dengue fever had been recorded in the Northern Division.
