Trust wraps up North awareness campaign

THE Uto Ni Yalo Trust ended its maiden voyage for 2018 to Macuata and the Great Sea Reef and islands off Bua after a successful two-week voyage last week.

The main focus of the trip was to advocate environmental awareness and ocean stewardship.

These included community talks and an invitation on board for schoolchildren and community members.

The trip coincided with the launch of International Year of Coral Reefs 2018 in collaboration with WWF, the Ministry of Fisheries and the Macuata and Bua provincial offices at Nukubati Island Resort.

The vessel provided a floating classroom to show its work and the art of traditional navigation.

During the trip, the crew visited Naduri, Nukubati Island, Raviravi, Yadua, Yaqaga and Naividamu villages and conducted waste management awareness, including a waste audit so the community could be alerted to the type of waste generated internally and those that "float" in from other sources.
