1 year contracts for teachers

Update: 8:01PM TEACHERS who were misinformed about the compulsory nature of the controversial proficiency test which took place in December will have the chance to sit it.

In the meantime, those teachers have been issued with one year contracts to ensure they get paid until the results of their tests determine a more substantive contract and posting.

The minister responsible for education, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum clarified this today admits numerous complaints this newspaper received from teachers following the December 2017 test.

"We had the teachers sit for the proficiency test, the exams that we had. We have since discovered that some divisional education officers told these teachers they did not actually have to sit these tests. So some of them did not actually turn up," the AG said.

"Obviously they gave out incorrect information. As a result of which, they have missed out on getting the contracts."

Mr Khaiyum explained the one year contracts issued to those teachers 'who were told incorrectly' the test was optional, was a way forward.

Meanwhile the AG said divisional education officers who had given teachers information which implied the test was optional would be subject to investigation which will begin Tuesday.

Investigators will include staff from the Civil Service Reform Management Unit, he said.

He added the investigation would cover the marking and data entry of the results of the proficiency test.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum there was a need for cultural change within the ministry and across the civil service which the government was aware off and addressing.
