Fijian impact

THE Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou, has applauded Fijian players who are representing other countries in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Tuitubou said Fiji had been continuously praised for the talents of Fijian players on the international stage.

"It seems the Fijian flair has become a must-have accessory for every nation," Tuitubou said while opening the inaugural Congo Waimanu 7s at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Friday.

"New Zealand has been a classic example of including many Fijian 7s players and there are other teams such as France, Japan and Scotland who have players of Fijian origin," he said.

"Indeed, we can justifiably claim that we are contributing to the development of the game in those countries.

"This proves the fact that Fijians are considered to be masters of the 7s game and our natural physical ability complements the sport."

He thanked Waimanu Rugby Club officials for organising the tournament which would help develop players.

"It is tournaments such as this that develop the next generation of champions eager to represent our country on the international stage.

"I am sure many players are knocking on selection doors and are just a step away to being chosen for national duty.

"Your sacrifice, commitment and dedication will not go waste and I urge you all to continue with your hard work, discipline and perseverance."
