PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is optimistic Fiji and India will continue to explore new opportunities for their people to expand co-operation ties.

Mr Bainimarama said this in his message on the country's 69th Republic Day celebrations on Friday.

"I extend my warm and heartfelt congratulations to you and the people of India on the occasion of the 69th Republic Day of India," he said.

"Our two countries are bound by historical ties, friendship, mutual respect, growing interest in each other's culture and increasingly stronger bilateral relations in numerous areas of our economic, socio-cultural and governance sectors.

"I still remember vividly your excellency's (PM Narendra Modi's) visit to Fiji in November 2014 which propelled and further strengthened the co-operation between our two countries.

"I am confident that in the future years, we will continue to explore new opportunities for our people to expand co-operation ties, especially in trade, agriculture, energy, medical science, education and innovation, as well stronger people-to-people and inter-social contacts."

India's high commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal said the day was commemorated to honour the nation and its sovereignty.

Reading the Indian President, Ram Nath Kovind's Republic Day message, Mr Sapkal said the day was to remember with gratitude the enormous efforts and sacrifices of millions of freedom fighters whose blood and sweat gave India its independence and created a republic.

"A happy and equal-opportunity nation is built by happy and equal opportunity families and communities."

He said a confident and forward looking nation was built by confident and young people.

Mr Sapkal said India and Fiji shared a great bond.

"India is a committed partner in Fiji's development process. Our two countries are now engaged in the process of building a modern multi-faceted partnership."

India became a republic on January 26, 1950.
