A TOTAL of $212,000 has been allocated to the Rakiraki Town Council for a series of drainage clearing projects expected to start soon.

Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy said a memorandum of agreement was signed two weeks ago.

Work will be carried out in different parts of town and will mainly include creation of open channel drains, clearing of debris from drains and installation of culverts.

"The total work is expected to cost around $212,000 so all work must be done in this financial year before June 30. Otherwise the council will not be able to get the money," he said.

He has urged members of the public to raise their concerns with the council if they felt works were not progressing as planned.

"What we are planning in Rakiraki is cleaning the river, clearing debris, opening these drains and dredging the river.

"We are also looking at building dams in the next financial year at the Nakauvadra and Penang rivers."
