THE Lautoka Rugby Union will kick off its franchise competition with friendly matches at Nadovu Park today.

Six teams are part of the franchise concept made up of clubs registered with the union.

The teams are Vuda Giants (Vuda Green, Vuda Blues, Draulu, KBL Lions), Rebels (Navutu, Rangers, Western Shield, Lomati), Knights (QVS West, Vio, Natabua, FSC), Sukanacagi Maulers (Vitogo, Naviyago, Vanuakula, Matawalu), City Steelers (Namoli, Tropik, Batiri, Red Hill) and Force (Army, Police, Wardens, Duiyasana).

The coaches for the teams will be announced this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Lautoka Rugby Referees Association members will conduct a clinic to clarify the new laws of the game prior to kick-off at 11am.

The union's secretary Sefanaia Scholte said the friendly matches would be played to create awareness.

"Hopefully players will turn up in numbers to try and get selected into their respective teams," Scholte said.

"Recently we had the coaches and managers meeting where we discussed the franchise program.

"The points system will start with week one competition next Saturday. The round one competition will be played on a round robin basis. Round two competition will be challenge matches.

"The program does not require any franchise team to pay affiliation fees, but we need their support in paying the match officials charges during each game day. All other logistic costs will be funded by the union."

The franchise concept will be played in the senior, development and under-20 categories.
