VETERAN sports administrator and former Fiji international rugby rep Paula Cavu was laid to rest at the Vatuwaqa Cemetery in Suva yesterday.

Families and sports administrators were present in numbers at the Wesley City Mission Church in Suva to pay their last respect to a man, who no doubt contributed hugely towards the development of sports in Fiji.

Cavu died at the age of 78 after a short illness.

He was part of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and played a part as Fiji entered into the era of professional rugby and also a founding member of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association where he served as president. He was a life member of the FRU.

Cavu is survived by his two children Peniasi and Laite, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. His wife, Kolora died in 2006.

John O'Connor, the FRU chief executive officer, former national 7s coach Alifereti Cawanibuka and primary schools athletics executive Patrick Bower delivered the eulogies.

"Cavu was a person who committed his life in developing rugby in the country," O'Connor said.

"He was a very strong rugby player and was passionate about representing his country. He was a straight forward person and never favours anyone when it comes to making decision."

Bower shared that Cavu and Henry Elder played a huge role in the development of the national primary schools athletics competition which is now known as the Chow Games.
