School pleads for dam, water

ALL we want is to get a dam that will provide water for the school, say committee members of Bureiwai District School in Ra.

School chairman Vere Tareki and manager Vonivate Lolivati said students had to get water from a nearby creek almost every day because of water problems faced continuously at the school.

Mr Lolivati said the dam that supplied water to the school was not reliable because it also provided water to three other villages — Nadogoloa, Delaiyadua and Matainananu.

Mr Lolivati said because of the school's location on an elevated area, water pressure was very low during the day time because most homes in the three villages used water at the same time. He said children were forced to go to fetch water from Tova creek for drinking and other purposes. Mr Tareki said the committee identified an old dam located about two kilometres from the school that could be reused to solely provide water to the school.

He said the problem was that they needed water pipes that could connect the dam to the water tanks in the school, which connects to the taps and other pipelines.

Meanwhile, he said, almost two years after Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston destroyed the school buildings and some of its teachers' quarters, it was through the Access to Quality Education Program funded by the Australian Government that allowed students back into classrooms this year.

He said apart from the newly-constructed buildings, carpenters are working on completing the construction of a boy's dormitory.
