The daily struggle for water

THE people from Naqeledamu Village in Tailevu have been without clean and safe drinking water for a year now, but life goes on for villagers and the daily challenges are taken in their strides.

Despite the hardships they go through, the villagers still manage to get by.

Village headman Mataika Tuicakau said the pump from a borehole used to fetch water had stopped working, causing water disruptions and affecting everyone in the village.

"When the motor of the borehole pump went bad, the authorities came and took it back, and we are still waiting for a new motor for the pump," he said.

"The reason they took the motor is because they said that it was bad."

Since the villagers started facing water problems, Virisila Tamani has been doing her laundry in a nearby creek.

"Life is such that sometimes we have to learn how to adapt in certain situations like this," she said.

"We do our laundry, washing of dishes and bathing in this creek as we eagerly await the help from authorities.

"Life goes on, we are still surviving and I thank the Lord for that.".

Mr Tuicakau added that in order to get fresh and clean water, the villages walk to the next settlement to get supplies.

Senior water authority officials said parts for the borehole pump were ordered and water supply at Naqeledamu Village would soon be restored.

Naqeledamu is home to about 200 people, 40 of whom are children.
