Increase in pending court cases

Litia Cava
Saturday, January 27, 2018

THE number of criminal cases pending in magistrate courts increased by 482 in 2016.

This is according to a summary of cases provided to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) yesterday by the Chief Registrar, Yohan Liyanage.

The summary also showed that 10,944 criminal cases were disposed last year compared with 10705 in 2016.

Mr Liyanage said the department was now looking at recruiting more magistrates to assist the department in reducing the amount of time used to dispose cases.

He said the number of magistrates had increased from 23 in 2013 to 32 last year.

"We have that challenge before us but we are advertising locally and also internationally to get magistrates and also other judicial officers who are competent," Mr Liyanage said.

He said the department was looking at contingency plans for risk management in events of loss of information.

Mr Liyanage assured the committee the department had a multiple record point record keeping which ensures that the tampering of records is avoided.
