Walesi's Northern launch

THE people of Drekeniwai and Tukavesi in Cakaudrove joined their fellow men on Taveuni on Wednesday to witness the launching of the Walesi digital television platform in their village.

Officiating at the launching of the platform in Korovou, Naselesele, Lamini on Taveuni on Wednesday and in Tukavesi and Drekeniwai on Thursday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the initiative would put these villages on par with current affairs around the globe.

Mr Bainimarama said in addition, the launching of the platform would initiate new and innovative ideas among people in rural areas.

"Through terrestrial and satellite networks, the Walesi signal is now available everywhere in Fiji, and we are well on our way to broadcasting free-to-air digital television to every home in the country," he said.

"The initiative is a major victory for Fiji and a major milestone in my Government's mission to give every Fijian — regardless of their socioeconomic status or their location — access to more and better information and entertainment."

"The Walesi platform has eight channels, such as FBC, FBC2, Fiji TV, Channel 2, MaiTV, Hope Channel and Parliament Channel and the slate of channels is expected to grow in the future.

"You can now follow more of the news and stay up-to-date on developments across the country.

"It is the duty of my Government to make special efforts to bridge that divide by bringing to the same level of services," he said.

"Walesi's technology allows our emergency departments to communicate directly with villages, wherever they are, by displaying critical disaster information on screen.

"We are also able to provide households with a total annual income of under $30,000 with free setup boxes."
