PM opens buildings

VILLAGERS and children of Vusasivo in Natewa have a reason to smile after the opening of a new classroom block and a teacher's quarters at the Vunisaiki District School on Thursday.

People cheered with excitement at the official opening of the new buildings by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

Officiating at the opening, which was the last official assignment during his Northern tour this week, Mr Bainimarama said it had been a privilege to witness so much progress first-hand in the North.

"Everything we've opened this week has been driven by my Government's vision and commitment to bring all Fijians into the fold of our development, to provide Fijians here in the North with the same kind of opportunity enjoyed by their fellow Fijians on Viti Levu," he said. "All of that development has made life in the North better, safer and more convenient."

Mr Bainimarama also revealed that 95 per cent of schools destroyed by Severe TC Winston were originally constructed without any building plans in place, leaving the country's education in a vulnerable position when the cyclone struck Fiji in 2016.

"Over 200 schools were badly damaged or destroyed entirely," he said.

"The quick fix would have been to erect new schools built to the same poor standards as those that were wiped away by TC Winston.

"But the reality is because of climate change, storms like TC Winston are only going to become stronger and more frequent in the years ahead.

"That is why my Government is putting in the time and resources to construct schools that will last, give our students schools they can count on in times of crisis."
