Sexual offences

THE Fiji Women's Crisis Centre and the Fiji Women's Rights Movement have hit out at the alleged rape and attack of a 12-year-old student in Nausori on Thursday afternoon, saying this was an issue that should concern all Fijians.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the suspect allegedly offered the student a ride and then took her to the Lakena Irrigation Rd in Nausori, where he allegedly raped her.

Ms Naisoro said the girl managed to fight off her attacker and freed herself and it was alleged the suspect then tried to run the victim over with his car.

FWCC co-ordinator Shamima Ali said these cases were becoming common these days and should be of concern.

"A lot of work really needs to be done to our men to change their behaviour towards women and girls," Ms Ali said. "One of the reasons people continue to do this is there is a low rate of reporting.

"When women and girls do report, the whole process takes so long and takes a long time for justice to be served. There needs to be improvement. If we want to top it (penalties) we all have to come to the table," she added.

FWRM's gender and transitional justice team leader Menka Goundan said it was sad to note in Fiji that majority of the rape cases before the courts involved children. "This is a very sad situation in Fiji and needs to be looked at more considerably and those sexual offences against children should be condemned in every manner," Ms Goundan said.

Meanwhile, Ms Naisoro also confirmed the same suspect was alleged to have tried to lure another girl in a similar way, however, she managed to fight off the suspect.

She said the suspect was arrested on Thursday night near Naduruloulou, past Nausori.

He is currently in police custody.
