Asbestos in hospital

Saturday, January 27, 2018

ASBESTOS-CONTAINING materials were discovered at the Lautoka Hospital after a fire at the operation theatre room in December last year.

The hospital, in consultation with the National Occupational Health and Safety Services, is in the process of selecting a qualified contractor to assist in the removal of the material.

In a statement issued by the Department of Information yesterday, Government said the asbestos-containing material were discovered in airconditioning ducts and pipe insulation.

These would have been used during the building's construction in the early 1970s.

"ACM removal will begin once a suitable contractor is appointed and OHS endorses an official asbestos removal control plan," the statement read.

"During the removal process, the hospital will undertake appropriate measures such as erecting barricades, enclosures, and signage as an additional precaution to safeguard workers and the general public.

"OHS will also regularly conduct air sampling and monitoring to ensure that the workplace, surrounding environment, and general public are not exposed to any airborne threats."
