New SOPD to boost services

LONG queues and congestion at the Nadi Hospital is expected to ease after the recent completion of the new special outpatients department (SOPD).

The new facilities have been in operation for a while and were officially opened by Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar yesterday.

Speaking at the function, Ms Akbar said the completion of the SOPD was a direct result of the partnership between the ministry, the Nadi Hospital Board of Visitors and Coptic Care Pte Ltd and Coptic Care International Ltd, a donor partner from Melbourne, Australia.

"The main aim of the refurbishment and transformation of the old hospital into the SOPD was to reduce the overcrowding number of patients at our general outpatient department," she said.

With a population of about 100,000, Ms Akbar said about 1000 people visited clinics in the Jet Set town every month.

"About 350 patients are seen in the general outpatients department (GOPD) daily.

"This may at times lead to complaints and frustration among our patients.

"To tackle this problem, our Health Ministry has partnered with stakeholders to help curb this problem."

She said the new SOPD facilities would provide services in areas including diabetic comprehensive care, mental health, hypertension, asthma clinic, medical and surgical clinic, and co-ordinate outreach activities by actively following defaulters and patient education and counselling.
