Concerns raised on health centre

VILLAGERS of Tukavesi Village in Cakaudrove have raised their concerns about the deteriorating condition of the Tukavesi Health Centre.

Mikaele Vosayaco told the Prime Minister during his talanoa session in the village on Thursday this week that to make things worse, many pregnant women in the village were being transferred to Savusavu and Labasa hospitals to give birth.

Mr Vosayaco said the condition of the hospital was deteriorating and needed refurbishment, adding that it had been forgotten for so long.

"This health centre was built to ease the burden of getting medical services in Savusavu and Labasa, but now we are being told to seek these services in these main centres," he said.

"It is really worrying because as farmers we do not earn much and we have to look for places where our mothers can stay, and it is costing us more money."

Responding to these concerns, northern senior divisional medical officer Doctor Tiko Saumalua said refurbishment works started recently. Dr Saumalua said only pregnancy cases with complications were transferred to Labasa and Savusavu hospitals.

"First time expectant mothers are also transferred to these big hospitals to avoid complications," he said. "Only overdue pregnancy cases are treated at the health centre.

"Services at the hospital are still progressing."
