GOVERNMENT has shelved talks on the development of village bylaws to govern the administration of villages around the country.

Responding to concerns from villagers at Vusasivo Village in Natewa district regarding the implementation of village bylaws, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said discussions regarding the subject have stopped.

Mr Bainimarama said the bylaws were brought up because of concerns from villagers on how village laws were not being respected.

"Keitou a ciqoma eso na vatutu baleta na kena sa sega ni muri na lawa ni vakaisulu rakorako e loma ni koro ka sa beci tiko na noda itikotiko (We received concerns regarding people not abiding with dress codes in our villages and villagers having no respect for village laws)," he said.

"Oqo e dua na vuna levu ka keitou nanuma me keitou bulia kina na lawa tu ni veikoro me maroroi kina noda veikorokoro (This was a reason we decided to implement the bylaws to protect our villages). Sa sega tale ni na qai toso na veitalanoa ya (Discussions on the issue have now stopped and will progress no further).

"Na veitalanoa ya ni lawa ni koro sa sega ni qai tosoi tale, na vanua ga sa yaco kina sa yaco kina (Discussions on the village bylaws will progress no further and will remain where it is)."

Villagers in Vusasivo asked Mr Bainimarama about the reasons for the village bylaw after rumours that it was implemented to control the iTaukei.
