National toppers scheme

THE national toppers scheme (NTS) is being awarded mostly to people of other races, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama told villagers in Natewa, Cakaudrove on Thursday.

Responding to concerns raised by Vusasivo villagers that the scholarship was mostly taken up by Fijians of Indian descent, Mr Bainimarama said this was true.

Mr Bainimarama said Fijians of Indian origins worked hard to achieve their scholarships, adding it was something the iTaukei people needed to learn from.

Speaking in the iTaukei language, Mr Bainimarama said he did not implement the scholarship for a particular race, adding it was for all Fijians.

He told people it was in line with his Government's dreams of discouraging racial segregation in Fiji and creating a united Fiji.

Mr Bainimarama said the Ministry of Education was currently implementing reforms in its system to ensure that every Fijian child received an education.

Elaborating on the issue, Mr Bainimarama said iTaukei people were fond of complaining about the other races holding most of the NTS, while they remained idle and did not work to get the scholarship.

In the spirit of the scholarship, Mr Bainimarama said it was implemented to honour those who worked hard to prove themselves worthy of accessing the scholarship.

Mr Bainimarama told the villagers that Government had already poured a lot of free initiatives to help children in Fiji access education.
