Chink in the armour

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s team coach Gareth Baber reveals Fiji's weakness ahead of this weekend's Cape Town 7s in South Africa.

Baber, speaking to this newspaper from Cape Town yesterday, said the chink in the Fiji Airways 7s armour was the poor defence, naming miss tackles and high rate of yellow cards.

He is working with individual players to address these issues to avoid more setbacks in South Africa.

Baber said the players' individual tackle accuracy were not good enough and this put them under pressure during the Dubai 7s last week.

"All our yellow cards came when we did not have the ball, so it is obvious that we are putting too much pressure on ourselves in this area during games," he said.

"The players are aware of this and have seen the impact it has in our review video.

"The game plan we are playing provided us with a semi-final spot by scoring 25 tries and I want this to continue.

"However, we need to be stronger individually to ensure we do not give up scores"

He said the inclusion of Fiji Airways Drua players Eroni Sau and John Stewart worked well because of their experience and work rate.

"The key is to take those learnings from tournament one and improve into tournament two.

"All of the teams in our pool have potential to cause problems. I believe that if we address the issues we have, we will progress."

Fiji is pooled with Canada, Wales and Samoa.
