Fiji secondary schools netball selects squad

FIJI secondary schools netball team has selected a 25-member squad to prepare for the International Series in Gold Coast Australia next year.

Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Association vice-president Adi Karalaini Seruiratu said they had begun the trials for the interested girls who wanted to join the team and they would have another trial next year to select the final squad.

"We thought since the children are on holiday it was good time to hold the trials so we had selected 25 players and we have given them their daily training program to follow until the next available date for our training which will be next year," she said.

"We have retained some of the girls who played recently in our Digicel Punjas International Series this year and we have new players who think are eligible.

"One of the problems that we faced last year was our fitness so the coach and the committee we have come to an understanding that in order to improve on our performance we start our training now.

"We will work on our fitness, our attack, defence and our ball handling. These players were selected during our Fiji secondary schools netball competition that was held in Labasa and we're now working with them to improve on their skills. We have girls from all around Fiji that we've seen how they play and their height so we have a good team of girls."

She added that one of the main challenges they face is sponsorship.

"At this moment we have Powerrade who is sponsoring us and we're glad to have them on board with us as we prepare to expose our girls in international tournaments.

"We would approach the Fiji Sports Commission to help us and also our mother body Netball Fiji if they can assist us.

"We're doing this for the sake of our girls and getting them exposed in a very young age. To groom future national players and this is where it starts and I would like to call on parents and everyone to support our young girls as they make a name for themselves."

The competition will be held in May on the second week of term two next year.
