Need to work together

Paloma Zapata told participants of the Sustainable Resource Management in Hotels training in Suva on Tuesday that monitoring sustainability in the hotel industry in Fiji was a short-term one.

"However, it was only the beginning of what is going to be a long and challenging process that can only be made possible by all stakeholders including Government working together," Ms Zapata said.

The Sustainable Travel International (STI) vice-president and training facilitator said the government, stakeholders in the tourism industry, STI, South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) and private sector associations should work together on this.

"STI works with multiple partners across the globe and specifically with the UN Environment under its 10-Year Framework of Programs (10YFP) for Sustainable Consumption and Production," she said.

Ms Zapata said the project had been piloted in Fiji and Samoa and 10YFP's Fijian partners included Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MITT) and the Fiji Hotels and Tourism Association (FHTA).

"It is hoped that through the participation of interested hotels, other hotels will join this initiative in the future so the program can be replicated to other Pacific island countries," Ms Zapata said.

She said STI's mission was to improve the lives of people around the world and the environments they relied upon through travel and tourism.

"By leveraging the power of travel and tourism, we aim to ensure that communities thrive and their environments are healthy for future generations."

Ms Zapata thanked the participants and the Government for hosting the training and acknowledged the long-standing partnership between STI and the SPTO.

The training, which was specifically for hotels, was attended by hotel owners, senior managers, hotel reps including members of the ministry, SPTO and other tourism stakeholders.
