FIJI football coach Christophe Gamel wants his players to pull up their socks before the side play the skilful Solomon Islands side at the Korman Stadium field in Port Vila, Vanuatu today.

The Remueru Tekiate-captained side, after their 8-0 victory over Tuvalu on Saturday, has a mammoth task on hand against Solomon Islands who are known for their skills including one touch football.

The side had played Solomon Islands twice earlier this year where Fiji drew 1-1 and then won in the second match.

"If we want to win the medal then we have no choice, but to beat Solomon Islands at any cost," Gamel said.

"It is simple for us if we really want to win then we have to take Solomon Islands very seriously.

"We made some defensive mistakes against Tuvalu and we have to cut that out against a quality side like Solomon Islands.

"We have played them twice this year and we know they will be physical and we have to be cautious of them since they are a very skilful team."

The competition is based on a round robin basis where the team which tops the points standing will win the gold medal.

"We have improved a lot playing against top teams like Estonia recently and it has made the players improve on their game," he added.

"I have every confidence in the team to win a gold medal for the country."

Fiji last won a gold medal in 2003 then known as the South Pacific Games which was held at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The match tonight will kick off at 6pm Fiji time.
