Solidarity questioned

MANILA - Pacific solidarity in Tuna negotiation at the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) has been called into question this week in Manila.

This was highlighted by leading observer advocate and Western and Central Pacific Tuna Program Manager for WWF, Bubba Cook.

"I think we are starting to see some fissures which again is unfortunate.

"You are seeing the PNA states, the non-PNA states. There has always been differences of opinion within FFA members. Very often at the commission, there will be an FFA statement and then you will have individual country statements that may differ from the FFA in large or small degree.

"We are all different people, we all have different backgrounds and different cultures so there is always going to be some disagreement but as I said earlier the real strength is when we can figure out our common ground and come together and push for measures that benefit everyone in the region. I think these fissures whether they are small or large work against the interests of all the Pacific Islands when they occur," explained Mr Cook to regional journalists in Manila.
