Hard work ahead

FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s players are expected to shut their festive season celebration in their quest to bounce back to the top four spot in the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series.

Coach Iliesa Tanivula said the players needed extra work in camp in readiness for the Sydney 7s in January.

He said the players would join their families this week and would back in training next week.

The side finished 11th in the recent Dubai 7s and Tanivula said their fitness level was their main downfall.

"It is disappointing, it wasn't what we planned and it is something we need to think about ourselves.

"We just didn't have the endurance, we didn't last all the games.

"We have the next tournament in Sydney in January and the girls need to work hard in the next two weeks and we are not looking forward to festive season as we need extra hard work."

Tanivula said one of the main difficulties faced was the lack of local competition to select his players.

He said he wanted to recruit some overseas-based players but there were factors to consider such as the expenses.

"Locally it's hard to select players because we don't have the competition like the boys, they have competition from January to December.

"We are looking at some overseas players who are interested to join the team especially from Australia and New Zealand but to get them in is another thing.

"Calls have been made in the media to take on some new players but the question to ask is, where to identify the players from when we don't have local competition where we can see what they have to offer to the team

"We also have some players that were not released by their employers.

"We have two new players in this team but we are thinking of expanding our player base unfortunately we don't have local competition, but we just got to deal what is available," he added.
