Memories from Cape Town

THE 2016 South Africa Sevens was the second tournament within the 2016-17 WRSS and the 18th edition of the South Africa Sevens.

It was held at the Cape Town Stadium and England made matters worse for the home team and the passionate African fans by edging the hosts 19-17 to grace the Holy Grail.

South Africa was on course to make a back to back, but the brave Englishmen dented their hopes.

The home side had been impressive after winning the Dubai 7s beating Fiji and had earlier beaten Wales 33-0 in the Cup quarters and shrugged off NZ 14-7 in the semis.

The final proved heartbreaking for the Boks who had dominated play and controlled the English onslaught, but faltered in the second half to lose by two points.

Meanwhile, Fiji had buried the disappointing loss in Dubai to top pool B after beating Japan 33-7, Kenya 28-22 and France 28-19.

England turned the tables against the Naca Cawanibuka-coached Fijian outfit winning by 31-26 after both teams were locked at 26 points.

Fiji progressed to the fifth place competition and faced a tough USA brigade.

Our boys were in full flight and dismantled the Americans 28-10.

In our final match against Kenya, Fiji won 33-21 and finished the Cape Town 7s in fifth place.

We had amassed 32 points from a total of 44 points at stake.

This week our boys face Samoa, which finished sixth in Dubai after the narrow 22-17 loss to Australia, Canada and Wales.

Wales and Canada had lost to France in the Challenge Trophy competition in the quarters and semis respectively 24-17 and 28-21.

We need to top our pool to avoid the Boks in the Cup quarters so a little bit more talanoa, commitment and patience.
