'Netball festival good for local players'

THE three-day International Netbal Festival Fiji in Lautoka is a perfect place for local netters to gauge their standards against some of the best players from New Zealand and Australia.

Former national rep Sala Drasuna said the 11 local teams participating at the event would definitely get the exposure they deserved to develop their talents.

She said the local netters were hardly tested by overseas teams and they should make a good use of this tournament.

"This is the type of exposure needed for our girls," said Drasuna.

"Playing against some of the upcoming players in Australia and New Zealand will best test the level of our netters.

"The Fijians are gifted and naturally talented and to be exposed and tested by overseas players will surely benefit their netball career - especially the young netters."

Drasuna thanked the organisers for the initiative of developing netball in the West.

She side such event should be supported by the clubs because the players would reap the benefit through skills developments.

Tournament official Jane Rushton said the event was to combine players from New Zealand and Australia to battle in the netball court.

She said the touring players would visit villages and communities donating netball gear.

"We will be looking for talented Fijian players and sponsors to send them to netball academies overseas," said Rushton.

The competition continues today.
