SACHIN Shailendra Reddy will serve as a tennis chair umpire during the Pacific Mini Games.

The chair umpire is much more than just the person who sits on a high chair during the matches and announces the score.

They are the guardians of the rules of the sport and enforces them to ensure a match is played in a spirit of fair play

Reddy got his first taste of officiating as he was appointed as assistant controller for the International Tennis Federation West Pacific Qualifying Junior Tennis Championship in 2001.

Since then he has officiated at various ITF sanctioned tournaments in the country.

A few years ago Reddy attended the National Chair Umpire Academy program for the Asia Pacific region in Australia where he gained his certificate.

Reddy said he had learnt a lot over the years.

He said the Pacific Mini Games would be another test for him.

"There is a pathway in tennis from playing through to coaching and officiating," Reddy said.

Reddy will also officiate at the ASB Classic in New Zealand from January 1-13.

He has been accredited as a line umpire for the event. The ASB Classic attracts world-ranked players. Venus Williams won the women's title in 2015 while David Ferrer from Spain won the men's title from 2010 to 2013.
