Training for recipients

SINCE last year the National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprises Development has trained about 4550 participants who have already received their $1000 Micro Small Business Grants (MSBG), says training officer Buloulevu Vakataumavi.

"And looking through their evaluation forms that they filled, we can tell that the training program has really helped them. Those that have turned up for training are really responding well to what's being taught," she said.

"The NCSMED carries out site visits to look at their business records and see how their businesses were operating.

"This is how we know that they are doing well or perhaps struggling a bit and need further help in training," Mrs Vakataumavi said.

When asked about the success rate of the program she said she wasn't in a position to provide a figure.

Mrs Vakataumavi, who has been a full time training officer at NCSMED since 2007, said the FLET training (financial literacy training) involved business record-keeping, costing and pricing, why they do business and cultural barriers and budgets.

"Basically we take four topics in every FLET training session."

She said the 14 who attended training on Wednesday had already received their grants and either had existing businesses, or had already started with a few about to start.

The Government grant is administered by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Tourism and the NCSMED plays a pivotal role in facilitating financial literacy training nationwide for all recipients of the $1000 grant which will be continued next year.
