THE much anticipated Oceania under-20 rugby battle between Fiji and Tonga ended in a 15-all draw at Lautoka's Churchill Park yesterday.

Fiji scored two tries in the first spell through number 8 Apisalome Boginidrau and flyer Poniani Batiniu while flyhalf Tuidraki Samusamuvodre added the extras with a conversion to lead 12-9 at the break. Samusamuvodre later converted a penalty in the second spell.

Tonga flyhalf Nautu'a Netane Masima scored nine points from his boot in the first spell and increased his team's tally with two more penalties in the second spell.

Fiji skipper Ratu Veremalua Vugakoto said they gave away many penalties allowing Tonga to capitalise on. He said the boys gave their best but was not enough to produce the goods.

"I thank the Lord and I thank the boys for giving their best during the game," said Vugakoto.

"We gave away easy penalties which I believed was due to the poor communication among the boys.

"We really need to work hard in the next few days at training and rectify the mistakes to win on Saturday."

Tongan prop Lisiate Sole said his team did not fully use their possession and opportunities.
