Assistance for young players

FORMER Flying Fijians captain Seremaia Bai continued to share his rugby experience with the younger generation and coaches during Rugby Academy (Fiji) rugby clinic in Lautoka yesterday.

Facilitated by a team of coaches from New Zealand, participants were familiarised and educated on the finer details of basic rugby to upskill and create a pathway for players to fulfil their dreams.

Bai, who has been conducting rugby clinics for players and coaches since his retirement last year, said the academy was the only way he could give back to the community having played the game for more than 15 years.

Yesterday's session at Lautoka included contact area and the breakdown, vision and decision drills, kick and run pass skills, tackle and defence work, handling, basic tactical patterns and game scenarios physical testing.

"The rugby academy was kind of my way of giving back to the community," said Bai.

"I just want to engage these young players especially in the West since there is not much happening.

"We are also looking for talents as we want to guide and advise them and their coaches."

Bai said a lot needed to be done for local players to become a complete and a perfect rugby player.

"There should be a proper structure relationship within the rugby bodies and provincial and clubs so we can create and have an ongoing program like this to educate them in terms of nutrition, education and how to train properly.

"This is important for coaches too because they are the ones who will educate the players. This clinic today includes body positioning during ruck and contact —— its all about education and this is what makes the difference between a world-class rugby player and good rugby players."

He said one of his aims was to groom players to become a better person and through his program —— a player to become a better person and to financially support his family after rugby.
