MORE than 500 volleyball players are expected to converge in Labasa this weekend for the Fiji Hotel Workers Volleyball Association tournament.

Organised by the Fiji Hotel Workers Volleyball Association, this is an initiative focused on reviving volleyball in the North and to also meet and make new friends.

Fiji Hotel Workers Volleyball Association president Jack Stark said the tournament could be an event that people of Labasa could look forward to.

"We are expecting around 53 teams from the 25 hotels from all around the West including the Mamanuca's, Coral Coast and Kokomo Island resort staff from Kadavu and Central Division players on the day and this will be an opportunity for the people of Labasa to also make some money by selling lunch packs," he said.

"This inaugural event will be the beginning of many other organised events for the North and this would be another way hotel workers could contribute to businesses in the North."

Stark said money raised from the event would be through registration fees of $300 per team in the men's, women's and mix volleyball categories and mixed netball.

"Part of the funds would be given to places like the Fiji Cancer Society or the orphanages," he said.

"We have given a lot over the past years to Cancer Society, orphanages and schools that were destroyed in the cyclone so all this is for a good cause."

The program starts on Friday evening with a church service at the Nasea Methodist Church before the official program starts on Saturday morning at the Subrail Park.
