No price set on gravel

THE price of gravel depends highly on the supplier and there is nothing that can be done about this.

Speaking to resource owners in Macuata on Friday last week, chairman of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Joeli Cawaki, said the cost of gravel depended on its size when it was processed through the crusher.

During the consultation, Mr Cawaki told clan and landowning unit representatives there was a different market price for gravel in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.

This is after a few resource owners in the Macuata Province raised their concern on the cost of gravel per unit.

Mr Cawaki said the market price had not been captured by the regulatory body to have a standard price all over Fiji.

"At the moment whatever price the supplier gives out then that is the actual price and also it depends on the demand and supply," he said.

"If the supply is low, the demand is high, and if the supply is high than the demand is low."

Mr Cawaki said the teams were in the North to advise resource owners on how they could be part of the development of minerals in partnership with investors who knew how to do the business.

"For so long it has been said landowners are resource-rich but cash-poor and I think it's about time now that our resource owners need to wake up and be part of the development of minerals in partnership with investors who know how to do business," he said.

"They also need to partner with someone who has the technical knowledge in order to go forward and with the idea of sharing sales of 60 to 40 per cent with a developer or the investor so the resource owners will be able to pay it off from the investor."
