Let's get it right

Wednesday, November 29, 2017

THE fact that our nippy halfback and gold medallist Jerry Tuwai missed out on the Men's Sevens Player of the Year Award should motivate Jerry and our warriors to storm Dubai and set the platform in the WRSS 2017-18.

We need to get back to winning ways and if, we are to make a statement in the WRSS then, this should start in Dubai.

If statistics are correct then Dubai has become a happy hunting ground for Fiji during the odd years.

We won our first Dubai title in style under Ben Ryan's magic, romping over the Kiwis and Springboks in 2013.

Our next win was in 2015 after we outclassed a brave English outfit.

It's 2017 and based on form, our boys should not have too many problems wrapping up the Dubai 7s title.

If there's any other inspiration then it has to come from the performance of our Bati side at the RLWC where our brigade defied all odds to kick the Kiwis out of the RLWC.

Our boys won the David versus Goliath battle and beat a tier one nation for the first time. Gareth has named his best and our boys are raring to go.

The Fijians are like a wounded lion, which is ready to prey and if our boys can maintain their discipline and line, then we are in for a rugby treat.

Baber knows that there is pressure on him to deliver results and it's time that our boys get the basics right. We need to be fluent on attack and defence and apart from communicating our boys need to show that they can play as a unit.

It's hard to explain feelings as I count hours to the Dubai 7s kick-off. My best wishes to Baber and our 7s side in their preparation!

As I conclude, I congratulate Perry Baker and Beauden Barrett for walking away with the Men's Sevens and Men's Player of the Year Awards. The NZ Women's 15s team and Eddie Jones also pulled a surprise!
