Fiji U20 visits home

VODAFONE Fiji under-20 rugby rep, Temo Mayanavanua has a lot to play for in the Oceania Rugby Trophy clash against Tonga at Churchill Park in Lautoka today.

Mayanavanua has been inspired by orphans living at Treasure Home in Nadi.

The Fiji U20 team visited the orphanage yesterday and it was an emotional moment for the lock forward because he went through a lot of struggles during his childhood.

He related his life story saying his parents separated and he was looked after by his mother who later on also died.

"Growing up with a single parent and unfortunately having to lose my mum at a very young age, I know how it feels to grow up without parental love and not getting what you want every day," a tearful Mayanavanua said.

The visit motivated him to play well today.

"It's an honour for me to wear the white jersey and represent my brothers and sisters. To come here and see these kids encourages me to play for them, not only for those who have their parents, but those in orphanages around Fiji and those in hospitals.

"We know that battles between Pacific Islanders are always physical and we need to come hard against Tonga. This game is important, not only for the U20s, but also low age-groups because it develops our rugby.

Head coach Koli Sewabu said: "It's an honour and blessing to be here to see and understand where these kids come from.

"It is something that we have been talking about in the past few days about the privilege they get out of the thousands of young men around Fiji who would like to be part of the team.

"The visit gave us more reason to play for these underprivileged kids."

The match kicks off at 5pm.
