A very proud granny

SHE went only up to Year 8 (Class Eight) because her parents couldn't afford her education and when Parva Wati turned 18, her parents accepted a marriage proposal from a suitor for her hand in marriage.

The Koroqaqa, Nausori native said it was a life that was accepted back then and even today in some segments of her community.

"I remembered feeling so scared, I was going to move to a new place to unfamiliar surroundings, I did not know what to do."

When asked what year she married, the 64-year-old does not only know the year, she has the exact date down pat.

"May 13, 1973," she replied without hesitation. "We would be celebrating our 44th anniversary this year if he was alive today. I still miss him," she said.

Despite the circumstances life dealt her, Parva has no regrets.

"We learn to adapt through life's journey. Otherwise how will you survive?" she said.

We met the widow in Navua where she resides. She was surrounded by her more than 10 grandchildren.

The family was celebrating the achievements of two of her grandchildren's academic acievements.

It was a proud moment for Parva and also an emotional one.

"I get teary eyed at times when I think back to my young days and how far I've come. My parents struggled to put food on the table when I was growing up and to see how far we've come gets me emotional all the time."

While she did not get to finish her education, Parva says she is happy to see her children and grandchildren carving out a successful life for themselves.

Her two granddaughters, Priyanshu Narayan and Doreen Narayan took out top honours for the Years 10 and 13 at Rampur College in Navua.

The duo took home more than eight trophies, certificates and medals for their achievements.

"Our grandmother has been the pillar for our family," said Doreen who took the dux award for the college.

"For every school event, she makes the effort to be there. She's always there to show support and we love her so much," she said.
