Learn from Tonga

I decry the sentiments expressed in this newspaper by the Fiji rugby league captain Kevin Naiqama supported by coach Mick Potter that Fiji should play more Test matches with tier one nations (FT26/11). They should learn from the Tongans who showed tremendous strength and attitude with a do or die approach barely losing to England in front of the king. No wonder they call themselves Mate ma Tonga.

League battle

Many talked of the looming battle between Fiji and Australia in the rugby league semi-final. It turned out to be more of a massacre of the Bati!

Welcome party

Thank you for not having that expensive party. But I heard there was a welcoming ceremony for the team that went to Bonn. How much did it cost?

Illegal acts

I refer to Steven Chandra's article (F/T 25/11) on illegal acts by our young, fit and unemployed. Have you ever considered that these young men may be capable but do not have the opportunities to work? It's either taken away or their dignity has been stripped. Society has been the cause and only society can provide the solution before it escalates.

Daylight saving

To date we haven't seen any statistics for daylight saving. No survey has been done for something that is being imposed on us every year. Seems like some people will never get to celebrate Christmas and New Year's Day in the normal hours. Like it or not have to live in DST. Some sort of survey would be very good as we know what the results would tell.

Rugby funding

Rugby league is certainly on a makeover and big kudos to Tonga, Fiji, Samoa and PNG making a strong statement to the rugby league hierarchy. Give us the needed funding and resources and allow the players to represent their birth countries to make the sport more competitive and a true display of talent and flair. Rugby union should also follow this step as it will certainly bridge the yawning disparity between tier 1 and two countries. The dominance is certainly under threat.
