Daveta targets the future

THE Daveta Development team is grooming future players to represent Nadroga in the Skipper Cup and HFC Bank Farebrother challenge in the future.

The Nadroga-based team was crowned bowl winners in the Raka 7s tournament after defeating Nakaiolo Brothers 12-7 in a close game that was decided in extra time.

Coach Jiuta Lutumailagi said with the services of old players such as Timoci Savuto and Jone Navure, the others were new players.

"For majority of the new players who played, this is their first time to compete in a big tournament like the Raka 7s," he said.

"We had 11 players who played because the others were injured so we had to go with the few players we had.

"I am grateful to the players for the job well done and as you can see we had only one substitute."

He added that when they returned from Malaysia and Singapore, the majority of their players joined their home teams to play for this tournament.

"We had one player from Waicoba and the other players were from Rukurukulevu and Nadroumai, so with the number of players available we had to continue our training every afternoon.

"One big challenge that I face is teaching this young boys how to play 7s. Our next step is to develop our players especially the Nadroga players to play for Daveta and Nadroga.

"There is only one tournament in Fiji that we participate in and that is the Coral Coast 7s and we're happy to be part of this tournament to expose our players.

"We had a lot of young players who played in the Coca-Cola Zero Deans trophy last year and now they are being roped in to play for us."

Daveta won $900 as prizemoney and in the plate finals Red Diamonds (Army) defeated Nawaka 21-14 for the prizemoney of $1200.
