THE 3x3 Fiji basketball team has started their work towards the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

The side will play in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games which will be played in Port Vila, Vanuatu next month.

Fiji team manager Kenneth Taliu said the team was looking forward to the challenges in the new code of basketball.

"We have been going through intense training sessions and we had court, gym and track sessions," he said.

"It is a new code since normally basketball is 5x5, but it is the first time there has been 3-a-side basketball introduced so we are looking forward to the new opportunity since it is more like a 7-a -side rugby.

"It will be an Olympic Games sport in the Tokyo 2020, so we have also started our preparation towards the 2020 Olympic Games."

The team consists of three players who would be allowed to play and one will be a reserve. Fiji will be represented by the men's and the women's teams.

"We are gearing and preparing for the future," he added.

"The future looks bright and we will give our best to qualify for the Olympics in 2020 and we have a good opportunity and we can build up since it is an ultimate goal for us to qualify for the Olympics."
