At home in Dubai

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s team has settled in well in Dubai ahead of the start of the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series this coming Friday.

Fiji 7s manager Mark Drown said the players had a long travel from Fiji.

"As can be expected the journey from Nadi to Brisbane to Dubai was long, in fact four and half hours and then 14 and half hours of flight time not counting the three and half hours layover in Brisbane. The effects of this type of travel can cause even the most experienced travellers discomfort, swelling, and sleep disruption," he said from Dubai.

"When you take into account the numerous time zones these players have gone through you can imagine the physical drain on their bodies. Fortunately, these are world-class athletes and the fitness level, nutrition level, and mental strength help them through these periods."

Drown said the team had settled well.

"To prepare the younger players for the rigors of international travel coach Gareth Baber committed the Fiji 7s team to several pre-tournament events ranging from Australia to Germany and California," he said.

"This travel exposed our younger players to the rigours of our travel, immigration, strict time lines for departures and internal movements, and the different time zones.

"In this particular travel period we were able to upgrade the players to business class from Brisbane to Dubai and coach Baber and I traveled in economy. This was a huge advantage for our recovery protocols in having the players in a more relaxed state physically for the players."

Fiji is pooled with Australia, Wales and Russia.
