New sugar initiative

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has identified 900 hectares of land for sugarcane planting.

CEO Graham Clark said the approval was given by the corporation's board members during its annual general meeting this week Thursday.

He said the new farming initiative would complement a second program that encouraged partnerships between landowners and farmers.

"We have been doing a lot of work in getting more areas under cane," he said.

"We know that we have to plant on a lot more areas now and we've identified large areas of land that need to be planted.

"We are very pleased that in our meeting today, the FSC board approved support for us to continue supporting joint venture farms.

"These are typically joint ventures with landowning units so that will allow mataqali to participate.

"We are seeing a lot of success in that."

He said the first 300 hectares would be developed at the start of 2018.

"We are kind of moving on from just under 160 hectares that we've had historically to identifying 900 hectares that we have been approved to use by the board.

"We will start developing the first 300 hectares and then a further 1000 or 2000 hectares to come after that.

"We are going to move hard on the joint ventures and I think that's a great new development for Fiji."

He said parts of Rakiraki and Vanua Levu had successfully implemented the joint venture between landowners and farmers.
